TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION LEARNING SERIES

As the office mandated to promote and facilitate knowledge and technology transfer, and commercialization, the TTBDO, in collaboration with the SUSTAIN-IPTBM Project will be held series of trainings dedicated for the improvement of knowledge, understanding and the application of technology transfer commercialization within the UP Mindanao population. The training was divided into five (5) days spread throughout the months of August and September, each day promoting different sets of skills and knowledge about technology commercialization, and each day with different target participants. Training was be led by Ms. Dyle S. Legaspi – TTBDO Technology Research Officer, and Ms. Lynda A. Buenaobra - TTBDO Chief Administrative Officer / ITSO. Both trainers are graduates from the recently concluded 3rd DOST-PCAARRD Technology Commercialization Mentorship Series. External resource speakers was also invited to share testimonials of their success stories in translating their very own technologies into profitable businesses.

Day 1 : Webinar on Revised IRR of RA 10055 (Philippine Technology Transfer Act of 2009)

in this webinar, participants learned about the government policy that aims to promote and facilitate the transfer, dissemination, and effective use, management, and commercialization of intellectual property, technology and knowledge resulting from R&D funded by the government for the benefit of national economy and taxpayers, and hopefully encourage the UP Mindanao research community to put forward their research outputs for actual application and public use. The lecturer was Lynda A. Buenaoba, head of the TTBDO.

Day 2 : Technology Assessment Workshop for Technology Transfer Personnel

With Dyle S. Legaspi as the workshop mentor, TTBDO personnel learned how to conduct (1) technical or industrial feasibility assessment; (2) IP potential assessment; and (3) market feasibility assessment. These assessment tools will guideTTBDO personnel to determine if the technology in question already has the potential for commercialization.

Day 3 : INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY (IP) VALUATION WORKSHOP

The Office recognizes the University’s limitations in terms of intellectual property research information and data availability, particularly in the financial aspect of potential IPs. In this workshop, Lynda a Buenaobra, chief AO, discussed (1) what IP valuation is – why Technology Transfer and Business Development there is a need to value IPs when to value it, and who can value it; and Dyle S. Legaspi, technology & research officer lectured about (2) the 5 Ps of IP valuation, and; (3) how to prepare an IP Valuation Report.

Day 4 : TECHNOLOGY COMMERCIALIZATION WEBINAR : ''TRANSFORMING SCIENCE INTO BUSINESS"

We have invited Two resource speakers from various scientific fields – agri-biotechnology, and food science – to talk about their experience in commercializing their technologies. They share their success stories and milestones, challenges experienced, and lessons learned relative to their IPs that have resulted in their current businesses.

The first speaker of the event - UPLB-BIOTECH Retd, University Researcher, Dr. Virginia M. Padilla, discussed how she developed Nutrio® - a microbial-based foliar fertilizer that is cheap, sustainable, and organic. Followed by Prof. Casiana Blanca J. Villarino, from UP Diliman College of Home Economics, how Kamotee, a sustainable beverage from sweet potato leaf extract invented by their team

Day 5 : Technology Portfolio Preparation: A Workshop on Preparation & Design of IEC Materials

On its 5th day, which is the last day, TTBDO invited Julius Neil A. Piala and Dyle Legaspi, as the workshop facilitator. The interested participants learned how to prepare Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Materials for the projects or technologies they are working on. After the lecture, the participants were divided into groups and tasked to apply the learnings using Canva and were critics of their output for better results.
