Formation of UP Mindanao KIST Park Project Regional Monitoring and Regional Committee

A meeting was held at the DOST XI Conference Room to discuss the formation of the UP Mindanao KIST Park Project Regional and Monitoring Committee. Facilitated by UP Mindanao, the meeting aimed to outline the potential roles and responsibilities of various agencies that will be involved in the development of the 12-hectare Knowledge, Innovation, Science, and Technology (KIST) Park within the UP Mindanao Campus.
Key participants included University of the Philippines Mindanao, DOST Region XI, DOE Mindanao Field Office, DENR Davao, DENR EMB Davao Region, DTI Region 11 , BLGF Region XI, BIR Revenue Region 19, Philippine Economic Zone Authority, DICT XI, NEDA XI, City Social Welfare and Development Office - Davao, the Davao City Planning and Development Office, the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., and the Davao City Investment Promotion Center.
Dr. Melvin S. Pasaporte, Co-Chairman of UP Mindanao KIST Park Project Committee and Chief Researcher of UPMin Technology Transfer and Business Development Office, presented an overview of the KIST Park Project and update on the ongoing activities being undertaken to establish it. He then emphasized the importance of forming a multi-agency committee to guide the project’s implementation, ensuring it adheres to sustainability goals and contributes to socio-economic growth in the region.
Following his presentation, participants discussed the significance of their potential contributions in ensuring the project’s compliance with both local and national policies. Inputs from the would-be members of the committee were solicited during the open forum and will be consolidated for consideration in the next actions to be taken. There was also consensus to involve other key agencies not present at the meeting to strengthen the monitoring and implementation of the KIST Park Project.
Ms. Christine Esther Flor L. Catoera from DOST XI also presented some updates in the process of PEZA registration for KIST, elaborating on Memorandum Circular No. 001 s. of 2024, which outlines the guidelines on the issuance of the KIST Evaluation Report (KER), and DOST’s recommendations to PEZA.
This collaborative effort among various agencies underscores the commitment of stakeholders in advancing innovation and fostering sustainable development in the region, laying the groundwork for a successful establishment of the KIST Park in UP Mindanao.
